AFD Beach Blanket Dragon Gather

At Natural Bridges State Beach, Santa Cruz, California on Sunday, August 11, 2002 from 10am to whenever with all AFD residents, lurkers or and friends

This is an impromptu gathering so that anyone in the California area can get together for some barbecuing, some swimming, some sunning, or just sitting and talking. You can find directions, maps, and other details at the following web site: Studio  Stormdancer then click "Dragon Gathers" on the menu.

Natural Bridges State Beach is a sensitive habitat location. This is the winter home to the Monarch butterfly, and there are fascinating tide pools Monarch Fairy and marvelous trails to explore. There is parking ($3.00 USD), a picnic area with grills, tables and shade for the picnic area is provided by eucalyptus trees. The beach is fairly clean, with just the occasional seaweed rope waiting to trip one. The water is cold, but warmer than some areas close by, and one of the few areas that it is advisable to swim in. The park is open from 8am to sunset. Santa Cruz is close by, along with The Boardwalk, which is a small amusement park on the beach next to Fisherman's Wharf.

Known attendees so far: Existing Phantom, Athelind and Quelonzia.

If you want to make your attendance known, or need more information, please contact Quelonzia

One Flees Tickle War

One Resident, firing a ticklekooza into the area, fled the tickling, which escalated when Scott L. employed decoys. The flight occurred at 12:15 p.m. EST. The firefight has continued all week, authorities said. In response, Seren Dipity called the fleeing ticklist a "dirty coward" and fell over. Soldier The area is unstable. The fleeing Resident's name is being withheld until their family can be notified. Shortly afterwards, Seren transformed into a bowl of petunias but remained vulnerable to ants tickling her roots. The most recent atrocity was the release of Dwaggie Nip but few were injured as Scott suddenly noticed poke-survivors of the last great poke-war and started bouncing on them relentlessly, ignoring the fact they outmassed him by a factor of ten to one.

Editorial
Pyros Rutilicus on the subject of Anarchy:

Impractical. It might seem to be a nice idea in theory, but it just plain won't work in practice. Nor is it even likely to last all that long if it is implemented. The reasoning behind anarchy is to do away with the fetters imposed by government, but once this happens there will be those who use their freedom to take advantage of others weaker than they. Accordingly, people will band together for mutual defense. These bands will necessarily become larger, lest a stronger band take advantage of them, and will require organization in order to keep it from dissolving and suddenly you're recalling something called a "social contract" from a government class you took way back when. The government will re-form, because the people want it to. Whether one is referring to a political or an economic system, there are certain systems that would work very nicely in a perfect world. Of course, the opposing systems would work equally well in a perfect world--ever stop to think about that? This world, however, is not perfect. Hence, I would prefer the systems that break down the least in an imperfect world, anarchy not being one of them.

Anthrocon
by Eredien

Here's a small summary of my visit to Anthrocon, my first furry convention and one of the nation's largest.

At first, I was rather apprehensive about going to a furry con. I'd heard stories about rather strange things happening in furry cons further out west, and was very uncomfortable with that. All of my fears were allayed, however, after I arrived at the con. Everyone I met there was nice, and everyone was fascinating to talk to. It was a lovely time. For me, the most interesting time, and probably the most interesting news to various other members of this newsgroup, was Friday night, Theatre Masks where I met up with dester'edra, an old friend; Arcturax; Valrejn, who some of you may know from the Alfandra MUCK; and Firewing, who hangs out on the #afd DALnet channel on IRC from time to time, for the AFD gather. We went out to eat and had a lot of fun talking about tea, dragons, anime, reading our fortune cookies, and admiring the truly great wooden dragon sculpture in the alcove. Then the spirituality forum happened. This was where a bunch of furries of all sorts gathered to talk about how they came to believe they were a furry, and what it meant in their life. It was fascinating, and I hope to stay in touch with a few of the people I met there. As dest said: "Kark would have loved this."

Some of the people I met there were dragons, or half-dragons, and we still felt like getting to know each other outside of the spirituality forum. So, on Saturday night, Silvenist arranged another biggish dragon gather where a bunch of people tromped by a table and chatted about perhaps putting some kind of scaly/dragon panel in at next year's con, and popular conceptions , or misconceptions, about dragons and draconity in general. DeviosX dropped by at one point, and other fun dragons whom Arc and dest and I hope to lure to AFD with promises of massive quantities of food were around. On Sunday Skywise showed up for a bit, he was great fun. I also saw (but, alas, did not get to meet) Aetobatus, and hung out with WalksFar for a while in the dealers' room.

That's basically the quick version. If anyone has any more detailed questions or anything, please, feel free to ask! I hope to be there next year again, and hope that this post might start some of you thinking about perhaps dropping by next summer. :D
