Ordos Ren celebrated his First Fruiting Day on May 31, 2002. Terratek graduated from high school. Kerowyn Silverdrake posted a new  picture. Ryoken, the brown speckled dragon, joined us.
Definition of the Week

According to the biological definitions, the difference between a parasite and a symbiont lies in the relationship between the two organisms involved. If both organisms benefit from being together, it is a symbiotic relationship. Examples of this include sucker fish and sharks, the former attach themselves to the latter. The sucker fish keep the sharks clean, and get to feed off the remnants of the shark's meals. Another common one is stomach bacteria and humans, the bacteria get nutrients, and in exchange aid in the human's digestive process. If one benefits, but in doing so harms the other, the relationship is parasitic. A virus and its host, for example.

Goodness Sakes!

Rainbow Fish Rai says he's no expert on Mesopotamian history, but he reckons Soddom and Gomorrah's populations may have been perhaps a thousand people. That's six million times less than the current population of the world, which means we're looking for 60 million good people to save humanity if we scale it proportionally to the 10 good people looked for in the Old Testament.

Look around your homeless shelters at the volunteers, see the teachers who are genuinely concerned for their charges' future prospects, take a the cops who actually want to keep people safe, the parents who cherish their children more than themselves. These people are all out there, in considerable numbers.

Are there at least 60 million good people in the whole world? Even assuming, purely for the sake of argument, that his arbitrary and rather limited view of 'goodness' is the only correct one, he reckons that's a cinch. Ultimately, morality is a personal thing, so no two definitions of "good" will ever quite match.

Encouragement

Vincent was reminded of an exercise they carry out from time to time in Boy Scouts. You get a large length of rope and tie the ends together to make a big circle. You then all get inside the circle, face out and lean into the rope. If one falters, the entire Troop falls flat on their face. It teaches not only teamwork, but that we all have to rely on each other to hold ourselves in place.

Heart-Shaped Wreathe Quelonzia Stormdancer, lover of storms and a certain stormdragon, responded to Awellyth on the subject of sexual orientation: I think that people like to "believe" that someone else is responsible when they want to blame their own behavior on anyone but themselves. But I notice that they take full credit for behavior they are proud of. <grins>

Each of us has the power to make our own choices. If we allow anyone else (including our parents) to influence our choice, that also is our own choice. Love anyone you feel right loving, leave the worrying about it to others. :)

To keep Trillian connected to the Network: Most IRC servers require identification from the client, this is turned off by default in Trillian. To activate it you need to do the following:

In the IRC connection manager:
- Select the "Identd" tag
- Check "Enable IDENT server"
- Change the User ID to somthing unique.

Some suggest using you ISP user name, but I don't. It doesn't stick until after you connect once to a server.

Next In Trillian preferences:
- select IRC
- set under MOTD, method - server
- click "apply"
